ASW READER PROGRAM

The ASW Reader Program was created in 2004, by order of Rear Admiral John J. Waickwicz, Commander, Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare Command.  The objective of the program was to identify emerging technologies that could have potential applications in Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW).  To achieve the program objective, Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare Command contracted with the Information Operations Division of Cubic Defense Applications in San Diego, California.

Jeff Edwards, a retired Chief Sonar Technician and award-winning novelist, was selected as the first ASW Reader.  With 23 years of experience in ASW, a background in process engineering and professional writing, and the ASW Specialist qualification (STG-0417), Jeff Edwards was considered an excellent fit for the program.  He has held the ASW Reader position since the program's inception.

In October of 2006, Fleet ASW Command merged with Mine Warfare Command, to create Naval Mine and Anti-Submarine Warfare Command (NMAWC).  Rear Admiral Waickwicz has since retired from active duty.  The ASW Reader Program remains active, under the authority of Rear Admiral Frank M. Drennan, the current Commander, Naval Mine and Anti-Submarine Warfare Command.
